"17 gennaio 1991: l'umanita e ancora una volta di fronte al caos, alle tenebre, all'orrore. E il caos della guerra; sono le tenebre della violenza; e l'orrore delle morti. La scadenza della guerra e prevalsa sugli spazi di dialogo e di paziente attesa, segnando cosi, "una grave sconfitta del diritto internazionale e della comunita internazionale" (Giovanni Paolo II, 17.1.1991). Non si puo camminare a ritroso nella storia. Non si puo camminare riproponendo la guerra come fattore assoluto della vita e della vicenda umana. Non si puo avanzare mentre si e gia costretti a contare le vittime innocenti di una catastrofe che da tutte le parti si aveva il dovere di evitare e la cui estensione si va facendo, di ora in ora, sempre piu minacciosa. Quanti bambini, quanti giovani, quanti anziani sono gia vittime dell' "orgoglio dei potenti"! Non si puo risalire attraverso il deserto che genera la guerra, mentre si va facendo piu larga e piu lunga la geografia di guerra. Perche la geografia di guerra e geografia di morte. Mai la guerra ha definitivamente ristabilito il diritto; mai la guerra ha ristabilito del tutto il rispetto della dignita degli uomini, dei popoli, delle nazioni. La guerra e, in ultima analisi, sempre una sconfitta. E sempre una strage inutile ed una mutilazione al corso della storia. E una sconfitta anche per coloro che pensano di esserne eventuali vincitori. Dovrebbero far riflettere, sebbene apparentemente lontane, due espressioni che - pur partendo l'una da un cuore di Padre, l'altra dall'aridita politica - contengono il risultato del primo conflitto mondiale di questo secolo: "inutile stragge"; "vittoria mutilata". La guerra, oggi, non puo che essere una sconfitta. E voler fare la storia con la guerra significa soltanto barbarico regresso."

"January 17, 1991: humanity once again finds itself in the face of chaos, darkness and horror. It is the chaos of war; it is the darkness of violence; and the horror of death. The deadline for war has prevailed over dialogue and patient waiting, thus marking, "a serious failure on the part of international law and the international community" (John Paul II, 17.1.1991). The frenzy of war has prevailed over the boldness of peace.
We must not walk backwards in history. We must not go on proposing war as an absolute fact of life and human events. We can't move forward while we are already being forced to count innocent victims of a catastrophe which on all sides could have been avoided and whose prolongation grows more threatening hour by hour. These children, so young, these elderly are already victims of the "pride of the powerful"! We cannot cross back over the desert that begets war, while the geographic expanse of the war itself continues to grow. For the geography of war is the geography of death. Never has war permanently reinstated law and order; never has war restored respect by all for the dignity of man, of peoples, of nations. War, in the ultimate analysis, is always a defeat. It is always a useless massacre and mutilation of the course of history. It is a defeat also for those who believe themselves eventual vanquishers. It would do them well to reflect on two expressions, although seemingly remote - one coming from the heart of the Holy Father, the other arising out of political bitterness - which sum up the outcome of the first world war this century had known: "useless massacre"; "mutilated victory". War, today, can only be seen as defeat. To want to advance history through war merely signifies a regression to barbarism." |
